We need to UNCOVER, UNRAVEL, and UNDERSTAND in order to move forward from trauma.

We all have had experiences for which we were unready, especially when we were kids. We all have felt overwhelmed at various points in our lives.

For some of us, the severity or the chronicity of the overwhelm disabled our healthy, balanced emotional systems. Our emotions were shocked into acting as first responders — always alert and “ready.” And we might have dropped into hyper-vigilance as well as learned-helplessness. We call this trauma.

Shame is the primary demon that keeps us stuck in this learned-helplessness. To truly recover from trauma, we need to uncover, unravel, and understand the dynamics of our pain and the shame that maintains it.

Trauma is the ultimate form of emotional abandonment.

When we’re children, we don’t understand how or why our caregivers could hurt or neglect us. Because we see our parents as the all-powerful gods of our small worlds, we can’t imagine that they would act without
